BioLab Lisboa is an initiative by the Lisbon City Council, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, and the Association for Research and Development of Sciences (FCiências.ID), created to promote sustainable innovation, the circular economy, and scientific knowledge applied to the city.
From botany to synthetic biology, BioLab Lisboa operates as an open experimentation space where researchers, designers, entrepreneurs, and citizens can develop biomaterials and regenerative solutions inspired by nature and oriented towards urban challenges.
The laboratory fosters the intersection of science, art, technology, and civic engagement. It is part of the city’s economic and innovation strategy and contributes to an ecological, circular, and regenerative transition, strengthening Lisbon’s resilience and creating new opportunities for employment, applied research, and sustainable entrepreneurship.
Among its international peers, BioLab Lisboa collaborates with several global networks of innovation and creativity, such as FabFoundation, Vulca, ECHN, and HTGAA, as well as with universities and research institutions, promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience and reinforcing Lisbon’s position within the international science and innovation ecosystem.
Through educational programmes, residencies, workshops, and European partnerships, BioLab Lisboa engages the community in building a more adaptable, innovative, and sustainable city.
With the support of its founding partners, BioLab Lisboa stands as a reference centre for urban innovation and sustainability, reinforcing Lisbon’s role as a European capital of innovation and a model for the circular economy.
